Matchday 4 of La Liga did not disappoint as it produced some brilliant and exciting matches. Fans were treated to stunning goals, incredible saves, and gravity-defying saves, just to name a few. Games this week were extra important as this was the last matchday before the international break. In this article, we will break down the highlights and key stats from these games.

LA LIGA MATCH DAY 4: FULL RESULTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

1. Getafe vs. Real Sociedad (0-0)

Getafe had the lion's share of shots and chances against visiting Real Sociedad but had nothing to show in a 0-0 draw. Real Sociedad must consider themselves lucky as they had 0 shots on target. The result ensures Getafe is still winless in the new season and lies 16th whereas Real Sociedad is 12th.

2. Sevilla vs. Girona (0-2)

Last season's surprise package Girona dominated Sevilla to win 2-0 away from home. Goals from Ivan Martin and Abel Ruiz ensured Girona’s win against a poor Sevilla who are yet to win this season and lie 19th. With back-to-back wins, Girona have pushed themselves to 5th in the standings.

3. Osasuna vs. Celta Vigo (3-2)

Osasuna and Celta Vigo produced the game of the matchweek 4 with Osasuna winning 3-2 in an entertaining match. E. Boyomo, Carlos Domínguez (own goal), and Abel Bretones were on the scoresheet for Osasuna while goals from Borja Iglesia and Moi Gomez were not enough for the visitors to avoid a defeat. Osasuna climb to 7th in the standings while Celta Vigo lies just one place below them.

4. Deportivo Alavés vs. UD Las Palmas (2-0)

Deportivo Alavés continued their impressive start to the new La Liga season with an easy 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. A stunning hit from outside the box by Toni Martinez was the highlight of the match and made it consecutive wins for Alavés ensuring they end the matchday in European positions ranked 6th. Las Palmas failed to build on their impressive draw with Real Madrid and lie in the relegation zone.

5. Espanyol vs. Rayo Vallecano (2-1)

Rayo Vallecano took the lead but ended up losing 2-1 to Espanyol in a thrilling game. Vallecano took the lead early with Alvaro Garcia but Espanyol responded almost immediately with Carlos Romero and won the game with a 96th minute winner from Alejo Veliz. With the win, Espanyol rose to 14th while Vallecano remained at 11th.

6. Real Madrid vs. Real Betis (2-0)

Defending La Liga champions Real Madrid had to dig deep for their 2-0 win over Real Betis. Kylian Mbappe finally scored his much-awaited first goal for Los Blancos. He made it a brace via a penalty later. The win will take some pressure off both Mbappe and Madrid as they are yet to find their feet this season with 2 draws and are already 4 points behind leaders Barcelona. Real Betis lie 17th.

7. Barcelona vs. Real Valladolid (7-0)

Hansi Flick’s Barcelona sent out a clear message for the entire league as they destroyed lowly Real Valladolid 7-0. A brilliant hattrick from Raphinha and goals from Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Ferran Torres, and Dani Olmo made it a pretty one-sided affair. Barca are comfortably leading the La Liga table with 4 wins from 4 and their nearest rivals 4 points behind them. Valladolid on the other hand is 15th.

8. Athletic Club vs. Atlético Madrid (0-1)

Atlético Madrid edged out Athletic Club 1-0 away from home late into stoppage time. Both sides wasted plenty of good chances but it was Angel Correa's shot from a counter-attack that secured the win for Atlético. With 8 points, they are joint second and 4 points behind runaway leaders Barcelona. Athletic Club is currently 13th.

9. Valencia vs. Villarreal (1-1)

Valencia finally recorded their first point off their season against 10 men Villarreal. Valencia went ahead with Hugo Duro’s well-timed volley but Ayoze Perez equalized for Villarreal in the dying moments of the first half. Valencia still occupies the bottom position of the league while Villarreal is 4th with the same points as Real and Atlético Madrid.

10. Leganés vs. Real Mallorca (0-1)

Mallorca claimed their first win of their season away to Leganés. The only goal of the game was scored by Dani Rodríguez in the 45th minute meaning both teams go into the international break tied on 5 points and lying in 9th and 10th places respectively
